About Frozen Shoulder in Fort Worth

Frozen shoulder – medically referred to as adhesive capsulitis – is a condition that causes pain and restricted movement in the shoulder. This disorder results when the shoulder joint capsule, which surrounds the shoulder joint and rotator cuff, becomes inflamed. While some patients experience a limited range of motion, others are unable to move their shoulders entirely.

Two categories of frozen shoulder

  • Primary Adhesive Capsulitis occurs when there is no clear cause of stiffness or pain. This form may be a result of an autoimmune disorder or diabetes.
  • Secondary Adhesive Capsulitis is more clearly the result of physical trauma.

Frozen shoulder usually diminishes over time, however, it can take one to three years for symptoms to fade without appropriate treatment.

Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder

Patients who suffer from frozen shoulder typically move through three distinct stages. These include:

  • Painful (Freezing) Phase: Lasting two to nine months, the first stage involves progressively worse shoulder pain. This pain coincides with a decreased range of motion. For most patients, the symptoms are generally worse at night.
  • Stiffening (Frozen) Phase: This stage lasts about four to twelve months. Pain typically lessens, but stiffness increases, further limiting the range of motion.
  • Thawing Phase: During the final stage, pain and stiffness reduce and normal movement gradually returns. This process generally takes between one to three years.

As you can imagine, frozen shoulder symptoms can take a serious toll on your quality of life. Everyday tasks such as driving, sleeping, or dressing can become difficult and cause discomfort.

Who Is at Risk for Developing Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder can affect anyone. However, those at a higher risk for developing this condition include patients who:

  • Are middle-aged
  • Have diabetes
  • Require a shoulder sling for a prolonged period of time following surgery or an injury
  • Must remain inactive for a prolonged period of time due to stroke or surgery
  • Suffer from thyroid disorders

During your first visit, we can assess your risk factors and design a treatment plan tailored to you.

Personalized Therapy

Patients suffering from a frozen shoulder can experience a variety of symptoms. As each individual has unique needs, treatment methods vary. At Texas Injury Clinic, we design fully customized physical therapy programs to loosen muscles and improve range of motion. Using the latest physical therapy equipment by Cybex®, as well as an upper-body ergometer, pushing/pulling devices, and more, we can target specific muscle groups to hasten recovery.
