Chiropractic Care for Children Is Gentle

When it comes to providing chiropractic care for children, a different approach is used than what is typically done for adults. Chiropractic care is tailored to the unique needs of each patient. For children, who are still growing, this means treatment is much gentler.

When spinal adjustments are performed on children, including infants, only light pressure, about the pressure of a light finger touch, is used. Pressure is so gentle in pediatric chiropractic care that there is often no “popping” sound as is commonly heard during adult spinal adjustments.

Why Do Children Sometimes Need Chiropractic Care?

Just like adults, children's spines are subjected to physical stresses. The difference is children's spines are still growing and developing, which can further strain the spine.

Other times, children are born with spinal issues or may develop other issues that may be alleviated with chiropractic treatment. Let's consider some reasons for providing chiropractic care for children.

Fetal Positions Can Affect the Spine

In some infants, fetal position can affect the spine, causing issues after the infant is born. Fetal positions, like a breech or transverse position, may cause spine to become compressed or spinal segments to be pushed out of alignment.

Additionally, the force of traveling through the birth canal can make preexisting spinal issues worse or lead to different spinal problems. For such infants, gentle spinal alignment can help reposition the spine and protect back health.

Spinal Misalignments Can Affect Children's Nervous System

The nervous system is made up of the spinal cord, nerves, and brain; together, they control the body. When misalignments, also called subluxations, are present in a child's spine, it can affect the nervous system and how the brain communicates with the body.

In infants, subluxations may be responsible for such issues as sleep difficulties, colic, breastfeeding difficulties, and reflux. Older children may also experience sleep difficulties, pain, and discomfort.

By adjusting the spine and correcting misalignments, it may be possible to improve the communication between the brain, nerves, and spinal cord, which in turn may help alleviate discomfort in infants and children.

Injuries and Physical Stress

One of the most common reason children may require chiropractic care is trauma to the spine from an injury or physical stress. Falling, wrestling with friends or siblings, or sports-related injuries can all cause injuries to the spine, which may need to be corrected with a spinal adjustment.

Sometimes a specific injury may not have happened but regular exposure to physical stresses, like carrying a heavy backpack or sitting in a classroom all day, can cause discomfort or pain. Chiropractic care can help alleviate the symptoms of stress on the spine, helping children overcome back pain and discomfort.
