What to Expect During a Chiropractic Adjustment By Mark Williams on July 31, 2018

Undergoing chiropractic adjustmentMany people have benefited from regular chiropractic services over the years. Whether you’re an athlete or just an average person, regular adjustments can help you reduce discomfort and experience better overall mobility.

Chiropractic care is pretty common, but a lot of people do not know what they can expect from the process. The team at our Fort Worth, TX injury clinic would like to cover some of the basics of a routine chiropractic visit.

The Patient Intake Process

Before meeting with the chiropractor, especially for the first time, it’s customary to fill out a patient intake form. These forms typically involve a questionnaire about symptoms and a rundown of various problems you are going through. This is a good opportunity to provide a basic idea of your issue that can be discussed and explored in more detail with the chiropractor.

Discussing Your Problems

Once you meet with the chiropractor in person, you can go into more detail about the pain or stiffness that you experience. If certain motions or movements trigger pain, you can demonstrate this to the chiropractor, who will likely have some follow-up questions for you as well.

Going Over Your Medical History

In addition to talking about current problems, your chiropractor may ask you about past problems or matters in your medical history that should be of note. Perhaps your current injury is an aggravation of a previous injury. Maybe your family has a history of back pain or other conditions. These are all important factors to consider when trying to create a custom treatment plan.

A Physical Exam

Next is a physical examination, allowing the chiropractor to see what is wrong with your spinal alignment. Even if you are only experiencing lower back pain, the chiropractor may wind up examining your entire spine just to make sure there are no other problems to address. Expect assessments of your range of motion, reflexes, muscle strength, and so forth. X-rays and other diagnostic imaging may also be used during this process.

The Chiropractic Adjustment Itself

During the actual chiropractic adjustment, your doctor will carefully apply manual force to move the joints into proper position. There are a few different types of motion that may be used, including:

  • Manual Joint Manipulation - Ideal for the middle and upper back as well as the extremities, these kinds of manipulations involve sudden force in quick, controlled motions to shift joints into the right position.
  • Low Force Manipulation - These gentler, slower types of motions involve less pressure on the body. They are most common in young and elderly patients as well as patients who suffer from acute pain.
  • Flexion Distraction Manipulation - This type of low-force treatment helps address issues with the lower back and hips. A smooth, pumping motion is used to help stretch the spine.

Side Effects of a Chiropractic Adjustment

Mild side effects may occur after chiropractic adjustment, and that is completely natural. This includes headache, fatigue, and soreness in the area that was treated. These side effects will pass usually in the hours after the visit.

Talking About Diet and Lifestyle

In addition to the adjustment, expect to discuss your diet and lifestyle with your chiropractor as well. You may be given some suggestions that will help minimize the pain and discomfort you’re feeling, which will help with pain relief in the time between chiropractic visits.
